In the frame of the sustainabilty lecture a student group under guidance of Evelyn Wallor developed a guided walk around the Hertha Spring in the Eberswalde district of Spechthausen. The innovative student project consists of 8 eight stations – at each location a short podcast provides information. The moorland panorama with its characteristic Alder marsh forest is the perfect place to take your time and – with the audio guide – explore the various facets of the vegetation.

The guided hike around the Hertha Spring starts (location 1) on the forest path, southwest of the street “Am Wasserfall”, in the Eberswalde district of Spechthausen.

The spring is located just behind the zoo. The spring is slightly hidden in the forest, but well signposted.

Towards the east, several paths lead to the intro station.

Right by the captured Hertha Spring and a little above where there is also a bench, you’ll get great insights to understand the importance of groundwater and spring water to this swamp. Take your time, see and listen to the beautiful peaceful landscape during your short stop (2). Then orient yourself to the southeast, first passing the bridge.

The moorland panorama with its characteristic Alder marsh forest is the perfect place to take your time and -with the audio guide – explore the various facets of the vegetation (3). After this, you will cross the bridge you have already passed and enter the next station. To the north.

After crossing the bridge, the huge conifers – more precisely Douglas Firs – immediately catch the eye. An excursion into this tree species is the topic at this station (4) . The trail then continues to the right, always parallel along the water’s edge.

The next stop is a visit to the beaver family. Just a few meters away, directly to touch and marvel at, are nibbled trees of the large rodent. (5)

At the second bridge (right, 6) we look at the next conservation-related topic, the Kingfisher. This is followed by a short input on the iridescent gemstone, maybe you will see it flashing when you observe it closely?

After crossing, follow the conveniently accessible path to the north and let the slightly mystical atmosphere take effect with a deep breath.

Location 7 is called Elder Wonderland. Listen and find out why?

Maybe you have already listened to it on the way to the end point or let yourself be captivated once again on the way back to the parking lot at the Zoo past the Zainhammer Mill: The last contribution (8) from us – the project group of the University for Sustainable Development Eberswalde – is a poem.

We thank you for walking our tour and hope to have contributed to some lasting impressions on the local conservation and sustainability. Friendly greetings from Caro, Sarah, Vera, Thea, Roberto, Shawn, Malte, Max, Thomas, Daniel and Fiete.
