With clear messages, inspiring personalities and tangible solutions for the future of forests, the fifth edition of the Future Forest Forum at Blankenburg Castle came to an end on Saturday afternoon. Around 450 participants from science, business, start-ups, politics and practice enjoyed two days of dialogue, innovation and collaborative creativity.

In an intervention from the floor, It4forest enthusiast Jan-Peter Mund addressed the audience in the session “Forestry practice in dialogue: Forestry under pressure – ways out of the cost trap”. Jan-Peter Mund introduced the WINMOL Analyzer and highlighted recent efforts of the IT4froest team to detect windthrows with the WINMOL Analyzer. Recently Stefan Reder supported local foresters in Berlin after a storm. He flew approx. 40 ha on 3 flights, generated orthomosaics from the 4000 individual images and automatically. Reder employed the WINMOL Analyzer to process the data. The WINMOL Analyzer analyses UAV-orthomosaics with Deep Learning techniques to obtain precise information of the spatial distribution and estimate the volume of the windthrown trees.

The session moderated by Prof. Peter Spathelf focused on proven solutions, current challenges, and bold ideas that are already working today.
