Hands-on learning in the forest: 25 fourth-semester students conducted field research in the Hermsdorf forest district today.
Scientific Survey 📊
On 6 sample plots with 12-meter radius, the students systematically recorded:
Tree height and species
Diameter at breast height (DBH)
Ecological stand conditions
Methodology 🔬
Application of modern forestry technology: Handheld laser for sample inventory in undamaged stands.

Together with Erasmus students from HNEE partner universities in Ghana (Sunjani University), Ukraine (Ukrainian National Forest University) and Ecuador (Ikiam), the students on the IFEM programme were welcomed at Tegel Forest Office by Forest Director Mark Franusch.
Cooperation between the Berlin Forests and HNEE has intensified since Storm “Ziros” (June 2025). The storm system “Ziros” caused significant damage in parts of the Tegel and Spandau forests, resulting in numerous windthrow incidents in the area. Scientists from HNEE, led by Stefan Redder Koithahn and Jan-Peter Mund, created a digital inventory for the Berlin Forests based on methods and approaches of the WINMOL research projects.
Another example of knowledge transfer and practice-oriented education in forestry!
