The WINMOL Analyzer – a software solution for the automated detection of storm-felled timber – is attracting increasing attention.
Recently, the FNR (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe), the German government agency dedicated to promoting the research, development, and use of renewable raw materials (nachwachsende Rohstoffe) and bioenergy, published a special feature on the WINMOL-Analyser on its website.
The analyzer is an AI-powered tool that analyses drone imagery. Using deep learning, the tool detects, locates and measures fallen trees in high-resolution aerial images. The method was developed and tested as part of the WINMOL project, funded by the FNR. IT4Forest enthusiast Stefan Reder Koithahn who is behind the tool, already proofed its functionality in a cooperation with the Berlin Forest Administration on the private sector companies OGF to analyse wind throws after storm „Ziros“ in June 2025 (as IT4Forest reported).
Reder Koithahn also entered into a collaboration with the Austrian Federal Forestry Office. In Austria, the experts there have integrated the WINMOL Analyzer into existing digital workflows in order to largely automate the analysis of drone data and the subsequent preparation of corresponding reports. Here, too, the aim is to further develop the analyser so that it can be used reliably in the future under the more challenging conditions of mountain forests.
The WINMOL Analyzer is currently available for practical application through partnerships with research institutions or via specialist service providers.
